Duolingo English Test Question Type Intro 6"Interactive Listening"

The "Interactive Listening" section of the Duolingo English Test features two types of questions. This blog post provides a detailed look at each question type and shares useful strategies for tackling them.

Understanding the "Interactive Listening" Question Type in DET

"Interactive Listening" is a new question type in the Duolingo English Test, aimed at assessing candidates' listening and interaction skills through realistic conversation scenarios. This section features two question types: "Listen and Respond" and "Summarize the Conversation". Candidates must answer questions after listening to a dialogue and then summarize the content within 75 seconds. The scenarios typically focus on campus life.

You can watch the video below to get the templates and tips for "Interactive Listening.

It's important to note that the "Interactive Listening" section lasts approximately 11 minutes and includes two sets of questions, each containing about 5 to 6 items, with each set taking around 5 minutes. Candidates should familiarize themselves with common scenarios, practice their summarization skills, and enhance their listening abilities through extensive practice and exposure.

Question Types and Answering Strategies

Listen and Respond

The "Interactive Listening" section begins with a hypothetical scenario that you should read carefully. To select the correct answers, it's crucial to understand the details. Make sure to spend no more than 30 seconds on this section so you have ample time to answer approximately five "Listen and Respond" questions.

After you’ve understood the situational cues, click 'next' to advance to the formal answering section. Then, select the dialogues; if your response is correct, the dialogue box will turn green, and if it’s incorrect, it will turn red. A screenshot of the det question type: "Listen and Respond"

Answering Strategy:

l Understand the Scenario Thoroughly:

Often, multiple answers may appear correct, but paying close attention to the details will guide you to the right choice.

l Listen Attentively:

Each audio clip is played only once, so make sure to listen carefully.

l Review the Correct Answers:

If you make a mistake, always read the correct answer to grasp the conversation's meaning.

l Double-Check Before Proceeding:

Before moving on, go through the scenario and conversation once more to prepare for the next question.

l Revisit the Scenario and Conversation:

Feel free to scroll back and reread the scenario and dialogue from the start to ensure full comprehension.

Summarize the Conversation

The "Summarize the Conversation" section has a strict time limit of 75 seconds and provides a summary of the "Listen and Respond" section you just completed.

Answering Strategy:

l Prioritize Length: Longer Responses Score Higher

l Aim for substantial answers in Duolingo, as model responses often exceed 50 words. Longer, relevant, and accurate answers increase your chances of a better score, encouraging comprehensive summaries instead of brief or overly concise responses.

l Use Sophisticated Vocabulary: Higher-Level Words Are Preferred

l One of the key aspects of scoring well is showcasing a strong command of advanced vocabulary. Duolingo favors the use of higher-level, CEFR-aligned words. To perform well, it’s important to replace commonly used simple words with more complex alternatives, thereby demonstrating a richer vocabulary. For instance, instead of using "good" or "bad," opt for more nuanced expressions such as "remarkable" or "unsatisfactory."

l Incorporate Complex Grammatical Structures

l The use of varied sentence structures and tenses is highly beneficial. This includes conditional sentences, and various tense forms to add depth and complexity to your response. Simple sentences may convey meaning but are unlikely to score as highly as those that demonstrate a more sophisticated understanding of grammar.

l Make Accurate References to the Listening Section

l It’s crucial that your response remains grounded in the content of the previous listening section. The conversation summary should reflect what was actually said, accurately capturing the setting, context, and details of the dialogue. Avoid inventing details or straying from the topic, as this will likely result in a lower score.

Additionally:

l Use first-person narration.

l Responses should reference past tenses.

l Begin directly and to the point.
