Combining vocabulary, sensory language, and comparisons is an effective method for describing paintings or artwork. We can divide it into five steps. Let’s analyze the following picture as an example:

A demo photo of DET "Speak About the Photo" questions: A giraffe.

1. Describe the Subject: Briefly explain what the painting or artwork depicts. Is it a portrait, landscape, still life, or abstract? What objects, figures, or scenes are featured?

Example: This painting illustrates the artistic process, prominently displaying the head of a giraffe.

2. Use Sensory Language: Incorporate adjectives that engage the senses, focusing on color, texture, shape, and size.

Example: The background transitions from vibrant orange at the top to a deep green below, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.

3. Mention the Atmosphere: Explain the overall mood and context of the piece. Is it calm, energetic, mysterious, or joyful? How does the artist’s use of color, composition, and light contribute to this feeling?

Example: The warm gradient of colors fosters a cozy, inviting ambiance, allowing viewers to feel a connection to nature.

4. Make Comparisons: If relevant, compare the artwork to other pieces by the same artist or within the same genre.

Example: This piece appears to be part of a series, as suggested by the two stacked sheets of paper at the bottom, reminiscent of other works exploring animal forms.

5. Share Personal Feelings or Reactions: Convey your personal response to the artwork and describe how it makes you feel. What memories or associations does it evoke?
